Rekey vs. Replace — which do you need?

Most Coryell County homeowners only need a rekey — it's faster, cheaper, and stops every old key from working. There are a few situations where a full lock replacement is the right call. Pick your scenario below and we'll tell you which one applies, what it costs, and how to get it done.

Scenario 1
Just moved into a new home
Average cost: $75–$120 — full-house rekey.

Recommendation: Rekey. You have no idea how many copies of the old keys are floating around — former owners, contractors, relatives, the listing agent. A whole-house rekey makes every old key stop working, gives you a single new key that fits every door, and leaves the hardware in place. Fast, affordable, and covers every exterior door at once.

Scenario 2
Lost keys with no spare
Average cost: $75–$120 for rekey · $100+ per lock for replacement.

Recommendation: Rekey if the lock is undamaged. Replace if the lock is worn, jammed, or visibly damaged. A rekey on a working lock costs a fraction of a replacement and gets you new keys the same visit. But if the cylinder is sticky, the key is hard to turn, or the deadbolt sticks, swap the lock instead — a rekey can't fix mechanical wear.

Scenario 3
Divorce / roommate change-out
Average cost: $75–$120 — full-house rekey.

Recommendation: Rekey. A whole-house rekey is the cheapest, fastest way to make every key the departing person holds stop working — front, back, garage entry, and side door in one visit. The locks themselves are usually fine; what you need changed is who they answer to.

Scenario 4
Visibly damaged lock
Average cost: $100+ per standard lock · $150+ for smart lock hardware.

Recommendation: Replace. A bent key, a loose deadbolt, a frozen knob, a cylinder that won't turn smoothly, or any lock that shows visible wear needs to be swapped out — rekeying won't fix mechanical damage. We bring the new hardware and install it the same visit; standard deadbolts from $100+ per lock, smart locks from $150+.
